Place rinsed black beans in large pan for soaking overnight. Cover beans with water.
In the morning, drain and rinse beans.
Place beans back in pan and add broth, garlic, and onions. Bring to a boil, reduce and simmer for 90+ minutes, till tender but still firm, Add salt and simmer another hour.
